CEX Recap: Key Takeaways for Authors from the Content Entrepreneur Expo

Bonnie Paulson here, joined by Mandy Stevens! We’ve been busy, but we’re back to share all the exciting highlights from our experience at the Content Entrepreneur Expo (CEX) 2024. If you’re an author, content creator, or just someone curious about the event, there are valuable lessons you can take away.

Check out our video recap of this amazing event below:

Understanding CEX and Why It Matters for Authors

CEX—the Content Entrepreneur Expo—totally reshaped how we view the author community and the role of writers. While this event isn’t specifically tailored for authors, it dives deep into content creation, which authors can’t afford to ignore. Whether you publish books, create courses, or even inspire your audience through social media, you’re a content creator.

The conference was packed. We networked, attended impactful sessions, and collaborated with some of the most innovative minds in the industry. Plus, there were lots of shout-outs to amazing people who made the experience unforgettable.

People Who Made CEX Outstanding

CEX isn’t just about workshops and presentations—it’s about people. Here’s who stood out:

  • Joe and Sue Solari: Our phenomenal hosts. They created the perfect group setting at their Airbnb, fostering creativity and planning for Author Nation this fall.
  • Shelley Hitz: The incredible brain behind Indie Author Magazine. Extremely knowledgeable and supportive, it was a joy learning from her.
  • Jenn Greene: Shell’s assistant and a logistics wizard. She’s managing Author Nation volunteers and AV brilliantly.
  • Isabella: Joe’s right hand who amazed us all with her expertise. She’s definitely someone to watch.
  • Joe Pitti and Matt Brille from Lulu: These two shared game-changing insights into tools and programs authors can use for selling directly to readers.

This wasn’t just a networking opportunity—it was a massive think tank for ideas.

Key CEX Lessons for Authors: What We Learned

1. AI Is Here to Stay (And It’s Valuable)

AI dominated talks, especially for how authors can use it responsibly. Instead of arguing over AI ethics, the focus was on how to make it a tool that works for you. From simplifying editing tasks to boosting social media content, AI saves time, fosters creativity, and enhances the reader experience.

For example, Mandy discovered AI editing tools like Descript, which shaved hours off her editing workflow. AI isn’t replacing creativity—it’s helping refine it.

A brilliant point at CEX: “Authors are content creators.” This shift changes how you approach AI. Don’t be scared to use tools ethically to stay ahead. Holding onto old fears about AI is like refusing email when it first came out.

2. Community Is Your Secret Weapon

During her presentation, Bonnie emphasized the importance of building and nurturing a community. One attendee realized they already had a strong audience—they just hadn’t recognized it.

Authors shouldn’t just build fanbases but cultivate meaningful relationships and create spaces where readers feel connected. Whether it’s on social media, newsletters, or book clubs, community-building creates a loyal audience ready to dive into whatever you publish next.

3. Think Beyond the Author Bubble

Most authors stick to traditional writing events, but stepping outside of those spaces offers huge benefits. Events like CEX bring fresh ideas from other industries. Thinking like a content creator means exploring new opportunities beyond just books. For example, consider collaborations and partnerships outside the author scene.

Why not host book events in unique ways? Community-hosted book fairs or collaborative tours could shine a spotlight on more authors, benefiting everyone involved.

Event Moments That Stood Out

CEX went above and beyond—from the 80s-themed party at Pickwick & Frolic in Cleveland (a must-visit spot!) to thoughtful touches like healthy snacks and incredible meals. The care put into the event logistics was next-level. It’s no surprise everyone walked away feeling refreshed, inspired, and ready to take action.

One highlight? Bonnie’s talk about using content to connect with readers and strengthen communities. It resonated deeply enough to move audience members to tears—not from sadness, but from realization and motivation.

Why Authors Need Events Like CEX

CEX is a wake-up call to expand your knowledge outside the usual book world. The tools, strategies, and relationships formed here are invaluable. Pairing it with Author Nation later in the year brings a perfect balance of learning, implementing, and reconnecting.

Attending conferences throughout the year keeps ideas fresh, strategies sharp, and connections thriving. Plus, you’ll avoid burnout by pacing yourself with events like these every six months.
